If you are unfamiliar with hair extensions, these are basically artificial hair added to the actual growing hair. They are used to…
• Cover thinning or thin hair,
• Enhance hair appearance,
• Increase hair length,
• Cover bald spots, and
• Increase hair volume.
Types of Hair Used for Extension Production
Manufactured in various forms, hair extensions are used for several application techniques. There are three distinct hair types used in the production of hair extensions:
• Human hair
Usually harvested from young women, human hair in hair extensions are stripped chemically of their cuticles for machine processing regardless of alignment of root tips or direction. Cuticles left in but with their root tip alignments mixed up, the microscopic scales of the cuticles would be exposed, snagging on to each other to cause tangling. Stripped hair cuticles reduce protection of the hair against sunlight, salt, dryness, pollution, and chlorine. They would also become brittle, swell, matt, and absorb excessive liquids.
• Remi or Remy hair
This hair extension has hair with cuticles intact with only partial processing by hand for maintenance of the root tip’s alignment. Remi extensions can be colored and heat-styled, unlike human hair extensions. Although expensive, Remi extensions last much longer than stripped extensions. Take note however that many manufacturers label their products as Remi even if the hair used doesn’t have cuticles or mixed with synthetic materials.
• Virgin hair
This kind of extension uses hair that has not undergone any kind of chemical treatment. Harvested and sanitized, virgin hair is sold in “hanks” as bulk hair. Hair quality and color are both dependent on its donor; however, hair in poor condition, damage from salt water, ultraviolet (UV) rays, inferior hair products, split ends or chlorine don’t make the grade.
Pros and Cons of Hair Extensions
Protein-bonded hair extensions, which use ultrasonic vibrations and keratin bonds to attach, last longer over other types if they are well cared for. Whether in “wefts” or single strands, bonded extensions can last more than six months.
Because these hair extensions use no heat when attached, they are less damaging to the hair. The keratin bond will not melt even when heat styling is applied on the hair. The only time bonded hair extensions can cause damage to the hair is if they are taken out by someone who doesn’t know how to do so properly.
Braided hair extensions, on the other hand, can be used for concealment of hair loss or bald patches at the head’s rear portion, albeit these extensions are not suitable for people who have extensive loss of hair at the front of their head.
The straighter the hair of the person wearing this extension is, the tighter the braiding needs to be. This “tightening” is done on the braided part of the extension and not on the attachment itself.
The Best Option: Human Hair Extension
Human hair extensions are the better option because the wearer can treat and handle them as they would their actual hair. You can use hot rollers, curling irons, dryers and even straighteners with human hair extensions.
Synthetic extensions may be cheaper but they also easily more susceptible to damage and are more difficult to work with. Human hair extensions, on the other hand, can be washed, treated, colored, curled, straightened, or styled in a perm. This is because the hair cuticles are not stripped off when manufactured. Human hair extensions last a long time and will remain natural-looking.
